Welcome to Owl Class
from Mrs Reed and Mrs Riden!
Owl Class' Motto is:
Be responsible. Be respectful. Be safe.
We will begin the year with a whole school cross-curricular project led by the enquiry question "The River Itchen: used or abused?". This year’s project aims to develop a deep understanding of the river that flows past our school’s gate. We will be investigating the way humans have used the river historically and currently, the geographical features of the river and the threats that the river may face from the impact of humans. We will visit Winnall Moors to get a closer look at the water meadows and also St Catherine's Hill to view what remains of the Itchen Navigation. We will be writing descriptive poetry based on the poem 'The River' by Valerie Bloom but inspired by The River Itchen and finally we will explore ways in which we can help to look after the river and protect all the creatures which live in it.
The project is designed to provide learning opportunities which are relevant and real for the children. By linking the learning from different subject areas it is hoped to make the experience more memorable and meaningful. If you feel you have an area of expertise which may be of interest to the children during this River Itchen project, then please let us know.
Our topic for the Autumn Term will be Rainforests & Mayans. See below for the curriculum overview.
This term PE is on a Friday. For their P.E. lessons, children will need a white P.E. t-shirt, black, grey or green P.E. shorts/skorts and appropriate footwear (trainers or plimsolls). Children are expected to have the correct PE kit in school every week, this includes a jumper and warm trousers for outdoor lessons. Please encourage them to take responsibility for this themselves - it is NOT your job to deliver their forgotten belongings to school for them!
Homework will be set on Wednesdays and will be due in the following Monday.
Homework consists of Maths, English, times tables & spelling practise, along with regular reading.
This year, we will be using Times Tables Rockstars as a fun tool to encourage chn to increase their times tables fluency. Alternatively printed activities can be provided on request.
We will also be continuing to use Class Dojo as a means of communicating important messages between home and school, and to keep you updated with what is happening in class. Please ensure you are signed up to stay updated! If you have any problems with the app just pop in and speak to Mrs Reed, who will be happy to help.
